President John F. Kennedy gives a historic message to a joint session of Congress, on May 25, 1961. Behind Kennedy are Vice President Lyndon Johnson, on the left,, and Sam T. Rayburn, Speaker of the House .
Included in the speech were the words: "I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth."
